This year our theme will be “Rooted in the Biblical Story.” As one Church together, we welcome and encourage your presence as an important part of our 2012 Synod Assembly. Please consider this a personal invitation to worship, learn, and engage in biblical study, as well as participate in the business decisions and bishop election, along with your fellow rostered leaders and congregational elected lay voting members. Our keynote speaker is Rev. Susan Briehl, and Dr. Diane Jacobson will be our Bible study leader. View proposed agenda>

Registration

The registration fee is $145 per voting member. You will need name, address, phone, email, age, gender, ethnicity, and congregation/specialized ministry name.

  • Assembly voting member and visitor online registration is closed. Call the synod office if you need to modify your registration.
  • Exhibitor/displayer registration is full.

Youth voting members invited to have lunch with bishops

All youth voting members are invited to a special lunch conversation with Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson and Interim Bishop Glenn Nycklemoe on Friday, February 17 at 12:30. The room will be announced that day. If you have questions, contact Jo Mueller at j.mueller@mpls-synod.org.

Speaker Bios

About Susan Briehl
The Rev. Susan Briehl has served as director of Holden Village; campus pastor at Pacific Lutheran University, and pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran in Bellingham, Wash. Currently, she is a member of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod, called to her work with the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People of Faith. She serves as the Distinguished Professor of the Art of Ministry at Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.

Her work includes a devotional book for families with children, "Come Lord Jesus: Devotions for the Home;" two chapters co-authored with her daughters in "Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens;" and, with Marty Haugen, "Turn My Heart: A Sacred Journey from Brokenness to Healing," a resource for those who are suffering. "On Our Way: Christian Practices for a Whole Life," a book for young adults, and Holden Prayer around the Cross with Tom Witt was published in 2010.

Her hymn texts include: “Holy God,” “Bread of Life from Heaven,” “By Your Hand,” and “Once We Sang and Danced.” She and Marty Haugen have written Santo: A Bilingual Communion Rite and Unfailing Light: An Evening Setting for Holy Communion. She lives in Spokane with her husband, Martin Wells, bishop of the Eastern Washington-Idaho Synod. They have two daughters: Mary Emily, a volunteer with the Maryknoll Missioners in Bolivia, and Magdalena, a middle school teacher in Kansas City.

About Diane Jacobson
Diane Jacobson came to the Luther Seminary faculty as an assistant professor in 1982, and was promoted to associate professor in 1990. In 1999, she became professor of Old Testament. She was chair of the biblical division from 1993 to 1996. She served as associate dean of MA/MSM programs from 1997 to 2006. She currently serves as Director of the Book of Faith Initiative for the ELCA.

Dr. Jacobson was an instructor in biblical studies at New York Theological Seminary in 1980-82 following work at Union Theological Seminary, New York, as a tutor in Old Testament and Hebrew (1976-1979).

Jacobson is a Phi Beta Kappa magna cum laude graduate of Connecticut College, New London (1970). She earned the M.A. degree from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary in 1975. She also holds the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from Union (1982 and 1990).

She is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and has been an Associate in Ministry (previously, a certified lay professional) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) since 1985.

Jacobson is a frequent speaker throughout the Church. Her writings include, A Beginner's Guide to the Bible, co-authored with Robert Kyser (1991) and numerous articles on such topics as wisdom, creation and psalms. In addition, she has written "You are Sanctified in Christ, Called to Be Saints" as a part of In Christ - Called to Witness Bible Studies for the Lutheran World Federation Ninth Assembly in Hong Kong (1997). Dr. Jacobson has also written the 1997 Lutheran Woman Today Bible Study, From Slavery to Service: A Study of Exodus.
