The Companion Synod and Companion Congregation Program came into existence with the establishment of the new Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in 1988. ELCA synods are paired with Lutheran synods elsewhere in the world to work together as partners in doing God’s work, giving to and receiving from each other. The Minneapolis Area Synod has been teamed with two companion synods:
