Lutheran Church of Christ Nigeria (LCCN)
The Companion Synod and Companion Congregation Program came into existence with the establishment of the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1988. Each synod was requested to choose a country with which they have had some type of ministry relationship and agree to formalize the program. Several of the Lutheran church leaders in Nigeria had attended the Lutheran seminary in St. Paul and established relationships with church leaders in the Twin Cities. Minneapolis accepted the opportunity to be in partnership with the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN).
It so happened that in 1989, the newly installed Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, David Windibiziri, was a graduate of Luther Seminary and his advisor, David Olson, was elected to be the Bishop of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA. In the following year, church leaders from Minneapolis visited Nigeria and formalized their companion synod relationships with hopes of finding congregations that would be willing to participate in the companion congregation program.
Currently, the Minneapolis Area Synod has partnered 15 congregations with LCCN congregations in Nigeria. See the list below.
