Understanding how Systems Function Workshops to be Held in 2010
February 25, March 25 and April 22, 2010
A series of three workshops have been scheduled to help us understand how we can function better in the systems of which we are a part. Each workshop will look at a major concept in systems theory through presentation and discussion.
WORKSHOP 1 – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2010, will focus on emotional triangles. We will spend time looking at triangles, the reason they are so pervasive, the ways to de-triangle, as well as to use triangles more constructively.
WORKSHOP 2 – THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2010, we will explore the tension between over functioning and under functioning in any emotional system. This is a particularly important concept for leaders of congregations to understand.
WORKSHOP 3 – THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010, will consider the process of emotional transmission within families of origin, current nuclear families, the congregation, and the whole trans-generational system.
Our leader, the Rev. Dr. John Martin Mann, seminary pastor at Luther Seminary, is a lifelong student of human behavior. He has a BA in Social Sciences from Clarion University, an M.Div. in Pastoral Care from Duke Divinity School, a ThM in Pastoral Psychology from Duke, and a D.Min. from Wittenberg University and the Ohio Theological Consortium. He has studied extensively in Faith Development theory with James Fowler and Family Systems Theory with Rabbi Edwin Friedman. In addition, he has studied with Peter Steinke and Larry Foster. He currently serves on the faculty of Larry Foster’s Clergy Seminars (A Family Systems Church Study and Coaching training process). Dr. Mann has facilitated clergy groups in Ohio prior to coming to the Twin Cities. He does consulting and coaching with clergy in the Twin Cities and on the East Coast.

Bridgebuilder process
A structured process for helping congregations in times of transition and tension.
- Viewing objectively a congregation’s emotional system, especially when a congregation is feeling a disconnect, discord or confusion.
- Lessening the anxiety which leads to greater clarity
- Redefining a difficult situation as an opportunity
- Focusing on assets/resources, not liabilities
- Empowering a congregation/leaders to manage their situation
- Finding vision for the future
- Increasing the leadership capacities within the congregation
- Renewing of purpose and mission
- Assisting in an action plan, a concrete move to an energized future
The Bridgebuilder process occurs over a series of months and includes:
- Entry Meeting: determining the readiness of a congregation to enter into the process.
- Congregational Education: teaching how the congregation functions as an emotional system.
- Interviews: collecting data from staff, leaders, and members at large.
- Action Report: a written report presented at a congregational meeting containing information learned by the consultant about how the congregational system is functioning.
- Action Planning Process: strategic consideration of information in the action report leading to concrete follow-up action steps directed at healing.
