Soldiers Ongoing Sacrifices: The Challenge of Coming Home Report

This initial report of the problem was used in support of ELCA resolutions in both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Areas Synods. Efforts to address the issue are spreading within the ELCA and other faith communities. We welcome your participation.

Your church can reach out to newly returning veterans and their families too. Here are some resources:

Bishop Craig E. Johnson: “Our congregations have not always done their most exemplary work in welcoming members back from wars. I believe the reason for most of that neglect is that pastors and congregations are not sure what to do for returning veterans. This volume is a wonderful primer for understanding the needs of returning veterans to their communities and communities of faith. Committees and Pastors would do well to utilize this book as they look to welcoming the baptized home from wars.”

Gary Schoener, executive director of Walk-In Counseling Center: “The richness of this book is exceptional.  As a psychologist who has worked with veterans from many wars I found the insights and formulations and recommendations incredibly valuable. This needs to be in the library of all churches who have a social mission and commitment to healing.  Packed with wisdom and practical advice, this is an invaluable guide for those who care about veterans and want to help them and their families manage the transition to civilian life. This book is succinct and to the point but bursting with helpful practical advice and guidance. The sections on psychological problems are masterfully done and will be helpful to clergy and laity alike. Beyond the extraordinarily useful information and guidance in this book, it provides an outstanding guide to other resources.”
