Independence Day: July 4
While not a church holiday, July 4 focuses on national values that provide meaning for soldiers fighting in war: independence, freedom, and love of country. This is a good time to encourage the reunion of military units for the purpose of mutual recovery from the wounds of war. The church or a small group within the church might consider hosting a lunch for those gathering at a nearby park.
Purpose
- Engage in an interactive healing process by helping veterans gather with people with whom they share a life-defining experience.
- Focus as community on shared values.
- Provide opportunity for fun, food, and sharing.
Process
- Locate a recreational setting for a July 4th picnic or celebration.
- Congregational members can assist with hospitality.
- Design creative parades and ceremonies and decorate cakes.
- Choose celebrative activities other than firework displays that do not have the potential to trigger flashbacks.
