Information

The 8th Annual Celebration of Confirmation has several new twists. . . .
This year, as we focus on caring for our sisters and brothers in Christ in Africa who face the tragedies and struggles of malaria, our event will be a Celebration of Compassion! And the invitation has expanded to include not only confirmation students and their small group leaders, youth ministers, and pastors, but also high school youth and  other adults in congregations who want to be inspired to be part of the NETwork needed to stop malaria in its tracks.

Did you know?
The Minneapolis Area Synod is dedicated to the worldwide efforts to contain malaria! Our synod – 164 congregations strong – has been called to be a leader in this inititiave, passionately working together, setting a strong example, and uniting to save lives. Together, we can cast our NETS of faith, awareness, and action.

Just what is the Lutheran Malaria Initiative?
This work is designed to mobilize U.S. Lutherans in the global effort to contain malaria. The Lutheran Malaria Initiative is part of a comprehensive international effort to reduce infant and child mortality by two-thirds and reduce overall incidences of malaria in Africa by 2015. For more information see www.lutheranmalaria.org.

Why is this initiative so important?
There are several reasons:

  • In Africa, one in every five children will die from malaria at the rate of one child every 45 seconds – even though  malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. Mosquito nets can make a difference, as well as insecticides, anti-malaria medication, water treatment and education. In partnership, we need to raise millions to strengthen the response and reach those most in need.
  • Can you imagine what we would do in the U.S. if a preventable, treatable disease was killing off neighborhood children at a rate of one every 45 seconds? In Africa issues of poverty, hunger, clean water and accessibility hinder the response.

Why bring a group to the celebration?

  • Every Minneapolis Area Synod congregation is asked to participate through prayer, education, advocacy and financial gifts. This event will help those from your congregation dig deeper into the issues and be inspired to make a difference.
  • Young people can lead us when it comes to compassionate service and giving! This event helps you to inspire  and equip youth to be active participants in this response to care for our neighbors in need.
  • All are welcome! Any size of group and of any age is welcome. The event will be geared to middle and high school students, but friendly to all.
